It became an anthem for the typical depressed teenager that was not understood nor accepted by his/her family and or society. I wonder how Hamlet would react listening to Papa Roach’s 2000 hit rock song “Last Resort” which contemplates the act of suicide and glorifies the act to an extent. Personally, his portrayal resembled me back when I was a trouble and depressed adolescent. Hamlet is dressed in black, angry at his family, and thinking if suicide is the way to go. Is Hamlet justified in contemplating suicide? Contemplating suicide and actually taking your own life are two different issues. To be or not to be: that is the question.

And to think that people have used this ten letter phrase as a means to choosing between two simple choices as portrayed by the most recent Wendy’s commercial regarding sauce! Hamlet goes on to state that perhaps dealing with the ills that we are all aware of by living our life is arguably preferable than the ills that we do not know of which is death since no individual has ever returned from the grave to shed light on life’s greatest mystery: what happens once we are dead? It is remarkable how in this ten letter phrase, Hamlet is proposing the concept of suicide and entering the debate with the numerous philosophers that have or will be involve in determining if suicide is ever justified and or an alternative solution when confronted with unimaginable suffering. Hamlet contemplates whether it is easier to die than to continue living the heartaches of life and the unpredictable element that comes along with choosing to live life on this earth.

To die, to sleep, To sleep, perchance to Dream aye, there’s the rub, To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles, And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep No more and by a sleep, to say we end the heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks that Flesh is heir to? ’Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. These first ten lines from the speech should reveal this ancient philosophical dilemma: I will say however that is crucial to know and comprehend that there lies a philosophical question behind this famous soliloquy that is the nature of suicide and whether it is ever moral to take one’s life in the face of suffering and stress. It is not my intention to provide a line by line analysis of Hamlet’s most famous speech. How would you feel if you were in Hamlet’s shoes? Is killing Claudius justified? Can Hamlet be understood for being in a wretched mood? Although I shall not discuss nor give a critical analysis on the former, there is much to say and argue for in the latter. If that was not enough, Prince Hamlet is filled with much more anger and depression when he encounters his father’s ghost and is informed that his father was murdered by his own brother, the newly appointed King Claudius! His father wants Hamlet to avenge his death by murdering his brother.

However, Prince Hamlet was in no laughing manner when he gave this speech in response to his emotional state due to the corruption and suffering instilled in him by his family.
